How much money have you spent at Wal-Mart throughout the years? Most savvy, bargain-seeking customers have spent plenty of time inside the store, grabbing the deeply discounted products by the cart-full, while swiping their debit or credit card, helping this retailer become one of the largest in the U.S. Wal-Mart has everything you could want or need, whether you're shopping for baby items, food, automotive parts, electronics, clothing, or thousands of other items. The store's appeal is based in part on its one-stop-shopping, catering to those leading busy lives.
The retail giant employees more than 1.2 million people across the world, paying out plenty of money to keep their stores operating and functioning each day. Known as the 'Low Price Leader,' Wal-Mart prides itself on offering the lowest prices of any retail chain store. The retail store is also the target of more than 3,000 lawsuits every day. Many of the lawsuits are frivolous, without warrant, and of little concern to the company. However, class-action lawsuits are serious allegations the company takes seriously.
A Wal-Mart Payday
A recent class-action lawsuit settled by the company could result in a Wal-Mart payday for you. A 2015 lawsuit filed against the retail giant by Jacqueline A. Cote alleged discrimination against the company. If you and your same-sex spouse were employed by Wal-Mart or Sam's Club between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2013, you might be eligible to take part in the class-action lawsuit, receiving a settlement amount of up to $15,000.
What's the Basis of the Lawsuit?
Wal-Mart employees alleged the company denied health insurance to same-sex employees until a universal change in their policy occurred on January 1, 2014. Wal-Mart settled the lawsuit, although not admitting any wrongdoing. The retailer says the agreement to settle was simply to avoid trial and the burdens of court. The retailer settled the lawsuit for a sum of $7.5 million dollars, payable to employees who were affected and who submit a claim form. Furthermore, Wal-Mart agreed to treat same-sex employees and their spouses equally when offering health insurance.
How to Take Part in the Lawsuit
Participating in this lawsuit could result in a $15,000 payout if you win, and perhaps more, dependent upon the claim form you complete and the number of claimants completing forms. There are two forms for claimants to file, depending upon the way the denial of health insurance affected their life. A total of $7.5 million has been allocated for distribution in this matter. The lawsuit award of $5,000 per year for each of the three years the retailer employed you could be in your hands by simply completing the appropriate form and filing proper documentation paperwork.
Short Form: The short form entitles employees affected by the denial of health insurance to receive $5,000 per year, for up to three years of employment. The actual amount of the award varies, with a final payout amount determined after all forms have been received. No additional documentation or proof is needed to participate in this lawsuit.
Long Form: The long form reimburses major health expenses incurred by same-sex couples denied coverage by Wal-Mart. To receive reimbursement for such expenses, medical bills must be submitted with the long form. Employees who incurred out of pocket expense due to denial of health coverage can receive up to $3.5 million to recoup their damages.
What Type of Documentation is Required?
To participate in this Wal-Mart lawsuit, documentation of healthcare-related expenses incurred during your time of employed should be provided if requesting reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses. If you paid out-of-pocket co-pays, medical bills, insurance premiums, etc., you should proof of these costs. Individuals submitting a short form need only provide proof of employment during this time.
